Design and printing of OMR sheets

Design of OMR sheets depends upon the objective of OMR implementation. OMR sheets are used for quick data processing in such areas as preparation of Application forms, Answer sheets, Survey forms, Feedback forms etc. Fields on the OMR sheet are designed with the help of circles, rectangles or ovals which are to be darkened by using No. 2 pencils or Blue/Black ball point pen. Again, the design of OMR sheets depends on implementation issues so that the sheets can be easily printed, handled and scanned. In many cases, the design of OMR sheets is affected by the type of software or scanner used for data processing. In every OMR sheet, following two types of elements are found.
  (1) Before-Print Elements (2) After-Print Elements
Before-Print Elements
Guides / Timing marks : Timing marks are located on OMR sheets, if these are to be processed using any OMR Reader machine. Guides are located on OMR sheets, if these are to be processed using any of our OMR softwares along with Document/Image scanners.
Response objects : These are the circles/ovals/rectangles on the OMR sheet and are to be darkened by using No.2 pencils or Blue/Black ball point pen.
Static Elements : These include printed text, boxes, labels, shading areas on the OMR sheet. Static elements increase readability of the OMR sheet so as to make it look nice, decent and uniform. Blank boxes are placed on OMR forms to capture photographs, thumb impressions etc.

After-Print Elements
Serial Numbers : In many OMR sheets such as answer sheets or application forms, serial numbers are printed so as to uniquely identify the sheet and protect it from being duplicated. These numbers are printed in increasing or decreasing order after the printing of OMR sheets.
Bar code : In many OMR sheets, Bar codes are placed for identification. In most cases, serial numbers are bar-coded. This not only helps to uniquely identify the OMR sheets, but also assists to quickly extract such data with the highest level of accuracy.

During design of OMR sheets, issues must be taken into account so that the various elements are placed horizontally or vertically with uniform alignment. Grouping can also be made so that fields belonging to equivalent category are placed side by side. For example, in an application form, fields such as STD Code, Phone Number, Mobile Number must be placed under one group or side by side as they belong to Contacts category.

The software used for designing OMR sheets also depend upon the type of software or scanner used for data processing. When any of our OMR softwares is used along with Document/Image scanner, the design of OMR sheets could be made by using any word processing software like MS Word, Adobe PageMaker or Corel Draw. When OMR Reader machines are used for data processing, design of OMR sheets could be made by using some specific software like ‘Datablocks Magenta Suite’. Once the design is made, it can be saved in a file.

From one design of OMR sheet, thousands of OMR sheets can be printed. All OMR sheets printed from one master are same in all respects. OMR sheets must be printed in some light colour that looks descent and pleasant. We normally recommend light blue, light red or light magenta colour for printing of OMR sheets as they look quite impressive in shape and style.

If OMR Reader machines are used, high precision OMR sheets are required. These sheets are to be printed in high quality multi-colour offset machines. There are only a handful of Printing Presses in India who are acquainted with printing of such OMR sheets.
If any of our softwares is used along with document/image scanners, OMR sheets can be printed by the end-user in any local press with a few guidelines from us.
